Frequently Asked Questions

Why use insects in edible products?

The use of insects in edible products offers numerous advantages. They are a sustainable alternative protein source, requiring fewer resources such as water and space compared to traditional livestock farming. Additionally, insects are rich in essential nutrients, including protein, fatty acids, fiber, and vitamins. Incorporating them into our diets allows for a diversification of protein sources while reducing the environmental footprint of the food industry.

What is cricket powder?

Cricket flour, made from ground roasted crickets, offers an innovative and eco-friendly alternative in the field of nutrition. It serves as a replacement or supplement to meat consumption, providing a remarkable concentration of essential nutrients. In fact, it is a rich source of easily digestible complete proteins, vitamin B12, iron, and chitin, a prebiotic fiber beneficial for digestive health. Its cleaner production process and reduced environmental impact make it a sustainable and responsible food choice.

Insect-based protein powder has a light nutty flavor. This characteristic allows it to blend seamlessly into a variety of recipes and protein drinks, whether added to smoothies, energy bars, protein pancakes, baked goods, and more.

Are insect protein powders safe for human consumption?

Edible insects must meet the same standards as any other food sold to Canadian consumers, whether online or in stores. When imported, exported or marketed between provinces, manufacturers must comply with the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada both play a key role in monitoring the risks associated with edible insects. Health Canada sets strict policies regarding the food safety and nutritional quality of products intended for Canadians. The CFIA ensures compliance with these policies by testing insects for pesticides, heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria. It also inspects facilities producing edible insects in Canada if laboratory results are non-compliant or complaints are reported.

Can I eat insects if I'm vegetarian?
